About the Newman Outback Drags: The Newman Outback Drags is an annual Drag Racing event, held every August in Newman W.A., as part of the Fortescue Festival. Drag racing is conducted along the runway at Newman airport. Anyone 18 years or over can enter the event, so long as the vehicle passes the scrutineering process. Most vehicles that race in the Newman Outback Drags are street legal.
The Drags are presented by Newman Outback Drags Inc, with the assistance of Newman Mainstreet Project, the Shire of East Pilbara, Newman emergency services, Healthway, Win Television, BHP Billiton, and numerous local businesses and volunteers.
Other Fortescue Festival Events: The Drags are held on Newman’s Fortescue Festival weekend. The Festival includes a wide range of events and activities:
The Newman Blue Light ¼ Mile Drags ran successfully and without incident for six years, along Welsh Drive in Newman. The original Blue Light Drags organisers provided us with the basis of what is now the Newman Outback Mile Drags.
Due to safety concerns with the Welsh Drive venue, the event did not go ahead in 2000. This left a huge gap in the Fortescue Festival line-up, as the Drags had become an important and well supported part of the Festival.
Thanks to the huge amount of support we received in 2001 from the community, Newman Mainstreet Project took up the challenge to reinstate the Drags in 2001 as an ongoing Fortescue Festival event. The Newman Outback Drags event has now been handed over to a dedicated Newman Drag racing body, the Newman Outback Drags Inc.

As in previous years, Newman Outback Drags entrants will race side by side along the runway at Newman airport, and spectators are able to view all of the racing action from alongside the runway. The airport venue offers great unrestricted views of the action.
